If 2 of Cups was a painting…

Today is a Valentine’s Day, and which card better represents love than 2 of Cups? It means love, unity, the beginning of a relationship and trust.

There is one famous painting that always reminds me about that card –  The Meeting on the Turret Stairs by Frederic William Burton. I was lucky to see it live in the National Gallery in Dublin. There is usually a special showing at the Valentine’s Day and there were some couples who got engaged while admiring the painting.

The artist was inspired by a Danish Legend about princess Hellelil, who fell in love with her bodyguard, prince Hildebrand. Her father did not accept, and he ordered his seven sons to attack and kill the suitor. Hildebrand got warned by his lover and managed to defend himself, killing six of Hellelil’s brothers. She begged him to spare the last one, which was not a good decision. He put her to prison where she died after being tortured and starved. Hildebrand got badly wounded during the fight and he did not survived.

The artist captured the beautiful and peaceful moment, when the lovers meet on the stairs and share a touch and a kiss. Unfortunately, it was a goodbye, as they knew that they will never be together.

It is a very sad, yet romantic story. I hope that you will get more luck when it comes to love 😉

Happy Valentine’s Day!
